@Muppeteer has done an awesome job with the lore for Forsaken Legends. Here's the first sneak peak at the introduction to the lore for our game. The entire lore will be found throughout the game world while you explore and progress through the game. We also have a cinematic introduction that's being worked on currently as well! Let us know what you think!

    The Legend of the Forsaken

Many years ago, the world existed in peace and harmony, it’s people lived long and happy lives. Though winters were long and often harsh, each year the cold snows would give way to gentle springs followed by glorious sun blessed summers and harvests were a time of plenty.

Six benevolent guardians known as the Sortileger, watched over all of creation and their guiding hand touched all. They were powerful magi who possessed the ability to wield the mysterious power of the six magics, and each mage controlled but one of the six. At times they would combine their magics increasing their power exponentially, and as the magics joined, streams of coloured light would be seen to weave and dance together in a spectacular show of light. It was often said that together the six had the power to shake the high mountains and cast aside the deep waters of the oceans.

No one knew from where they had come, and their origins remained a mystery even to their closest and most trusted advisors. The Sortileger had existed for countless millennia and in stories told to children, it was said that they had been created long ago by ‘The Mother’, the unseen creator of all life and source of the power that feeds all that grows. She was said to have set the Sortileger to watch over her creation, to shepherd her creatures and tend to her gardens. Fairy tale or not, the Mother was honoured each year by the all the peoples of the Sortileger who held great summer festivals in her honour.

The Sortileger were all unusually tall, and at seven feet or more, they towered over those around them. They all looked remarkably similar to one another and many believed they shared a common lineage, but no one knew for sure. Their faces were thin and gaunt with high angular cheekbones that underlined dark piercing eyes above which long thin eyebrows tapered and curled upwards at the ends. Long flowing hair cascaded down over narrow shoulders almost to the leather belts that gathered in their loose robes. Pale bony hands emerged from the shadows of wide gaping cuffs revealing long thin fingers each tipped with a nail that tapered into a sharp nib like point. The Sortileger always walked barefoot, but the strangest thing was that they appeared to float rather than walk, leaving no discernable footprints to betray their passing, even in the softest snows of winter.

One dark night, at the time of the winter festival, it came to pass that an ominous black cloud arose silently into the starlit sky, it’s inky blackness billowed upwards and spread across the heavens above. Those that looked up that night bore witness to a spectacular vision of pulsating light rising from the horizon in all directions. The light raced towards the expanding blackness, filling the air with a swirling mass of spectacular colours that seemed to encircle the ominous dark cloud. The light embraced the black mass and the sky exploded in a blinding flash and a raging fire. The conflagration which would later become known as the Scour, sped across the night. It burned all that it touched, withered all that felt its heat and blighted all of creation. Nothing living escaped untouched that night...nothing save for one small group, in one isolated corner of the world, where the peoples of the mage Galinar were miraculously spared the full excesses of the night’s horrors that the Scour had inflicted upon the world. As it rolled across their lands, the Scour appeared to lose much of it’s initial violence, it’s destruction tempered, seemingly by some unseen hand and many souls were saved from certain death.

Those that survived found sanctuary in the dark labyrinths beneath Galinar’s high tower, where they huddled and called desperately for him to aid them in their hour of need, but he was gone and for the first time they knew despair. Families comforted each other in the darkness, some gathered the children of missing parents and took them into their care, while others attended to those unfortunate souls that had been touched by the Scour. A few brave souls even turned back into the night, risking their lives in the hope of saving others less fortunate.

All those that had survived had lost friends, neighbours and loved ones; none beneath the tower was left unaffected by the destruction. Many recalled seeing those caught in the grip of the Scour being flayed alive or twisted into demonesque figures that then fled screaming into the night.

As dawn broke and silence returned to the world above them, the people continued to cower in fear, still too afraid to leave the safety of the dark tunnels. The steady flow of refugees had stopped and many heroic rescuers had failed to return to the sanctuary below.

No one dared go beyond the massive doors of the entrance until one brave man struggled to his feet and walked back towards the dawn light to survey the devastation that the Scour had wrought. He was gone for many hours and those awaiting his return thought that he must have perished or perhaps lost his way amongst the devastation. They looked up in awe at the once blue sky above which now had the appearance of oil on water. Eddies of colour mixed with ribbons of pure black swirled endlessly above them. It was an unnerving sight that sent shivers down the spines of all who saw it.

The sun had begun its descent before the lone explorer reappeared on the distant ridge, he was pointing urgently at something high above them. They had no way to see what was causing him so much agitation and his urgent calls were lost on the morning breeze. As they beckoned him closer, a loud cracking rang out on the hill above them and the earth began to shake violently beneath their feet. The cracking became deeper, becoming more like the sound of distant rolling thunder. Suddenly without any further warning, the great tower above crashed down, trapping them below. What had been a safe haven had now become a tomb and a dusty silence fell in the darkness.

In the days that followed, the unfortunate souls touched by the scour had seemed tormented, as if driven mad by unseen demons. Many were physically deformed, twisted and scarred and no treatment could be found for their terrible injuries. Gradually, all those afflicted had died and their deformed bodies were laid to rest in a small dark room that lay off the main chamber. People were alarmed that, one by one the bodies of the dead mysteriously vanished leaving behind no trace of their passing, and it was then that the haunting screams began to rise up out of the dark depths below.

The people of Galinar set to exploring the labyrinth below the now ruined tower, searching for a way out or for anything to aid their survival. They discovered vast stockpiles of food that seemed strangely immune to decay and large subterranean lakes filled with dark icy water that ensured they would not starve or perish from thirst.

The tunnels and caves contained many workshops, laboratories storerooms, and carved chambers amongst which the people founded a subterranean city, the city of Galinar’s Hope. They named themselves ‘The Forsaken of Galinar’ and they never lost hope that one day he would return and lead them out of the darkness.

Over the coming months, the haunting screams continued to echo unabated from far below and many rumours spread of people going missing in the dark depths. No one dared venture down to investigate or even search for those that had disappeared. In fear the Forsaken set to work collapsing tunnels and building walls to block the entrances that lead down into the lowest levels of the labyrinth. Shortly after the lowest levels were sealed the cries from below finally fell silent and the disappearances stopped, but the Forsaken never lost their fear of the darkest levels of their new home.

In a bid to escape, many new tunnels were excavated, each heading outwards from the city. But every tunnel, no matter how straight, lead inexplicably back into the city. It eventually became obvious that some form of enchantment was at work and reluctantly the city elders decided that no further tunnels would be dug and their efforts to escape were put aside.

    . . .

Close on a hundred years have passed since the night of the Scour and for almost five generations the Forsaken have lived below the earth, isolated from the world and unaware of what lies above. Food has begun to run short and the population has outgrown the city they have built. The time has arrived for them to leave, it is time for the Forsaken to step forth back into the light and once more look up to the open skies.

Finally, almost by chance, they have found a way to escape the gloomy depths and now prepare to set forth on an epic journey of discovery. It is now time for them to learn who they once were and to understand who they have since become. Much has been forgotten, their history has faded into distant memory and the events that lead to their long exile have become legend veiled in mystery.

There is much to build, great knowledge to be gained and vast lands to be explored. Many souls have already ventured out to prepare the way for those that will follow, but this is not only their story, this is also your story as you take up the call of your people.

Are you ready to take the challenge, are you prepared to reclaim your inheritance and rebuild a society lost so long ago?

Then step forth into the light of a new dawn and earn your place as a hero of your people...

Nice job Muppet, very well articulated and thought out. I like the backstory a lot, but I am curious how they broke out of the depths to the surface to begin with. It sounded like they were trapped but then 100 years later they could magically just make their way to the surface because they were over populated? Why didn't they just dig out to begin with? I missed that part, could you explain? Other than that, I am really curious what caused the Scour, and what happened to the Sortileger after the Scour. I'm sure we will find out piece by piece, and I look forward to it. I was skeptical how a procedurally generated world could have any kind of back story when land is randomly generated, but this, this is an excellent solution to that conundrum.

They tried to tunnel out but they kept ending up back in the city, magical places can be tricky :)

"In a bid to escape, many new tunnels were excavated, each heading outwards from the city. But every tunnel, no matter how straight, lead inexplicably back into the city. It eventually became obvious that some form of enchantment was at work and reluctantly the city elders decided that no further tunnels would be dug and their efforts to escape were put aside."

The method of escape is explained in the next installment but you will have to wait until the cinematic part is ready. More details will be revealed pre launch but the answer to the majority of how, what, if questions will be discovered as players progress through the story
